SATELLITE DATA AND ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE FOR FINTECH
- Period: 2024 - 2025
- Programme: SPOKE 2 “Fundamental Research & Space Economy”, (PNRR) Mission 4, “Education & Research” - Component 2, “From research to business” – Investment line 1.4
- Budget: Euro € 213.360,00
One of the most promising methods for evaluating trading strategies is based on the analysis of satellite data. The main goal of the project is to develop an algorithmic trading system based on Artificial Intelligence (AI) capable of identifying financial trading strategies by leveraging data and information available from the web and satellite sources. This approach, which utilizes satellite data and high-performance computing, enables nowcasting of key metrics to achieve better results in high-frequency trading (HFT), as well as in short-term and medium-to-long-term trading. The necessity of determining effective trading strategies also stems from the complexity of the dynamics driving financial markets, which makes it challenging to formulate successful strategies. Specifically, executing models based on large datasets with many variables requires computational power, parallelization, and efficiency. For this reason, the project will develop algorithms specifically designed for GPUs. The system will consist of two modules, which will form the two work packages of this project: the first module will handle the extraction of information from the web and satellite data, followed by processing to generate a synthetic and functional representation of the data. The second module will be the actual automated trading system, where the information gathered from the first module will be used to train an AI-based model aimed at determining an effective trading strategy.
SPECTRA
SPECTRAL PATTERN EXTRACTION FOR CLASSIFYING TRANSIENT RADIATIONS IN ASTRONOMY WITH ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
- Period: 2024 - 2025
- Programme: SPOKE 3 “Tourism and Culture Industry”, (PNRR) Mission 4, “Education & Research” - Component 2, “From research to business” – Investment line 1.4
- Budget: Euro € 95.436,00
The SPECTRA project aims to innovate astronomical observation by applying Artificial Intelligence (AI) to identify and analyze transient astronomical sources from high-energy gamma-ray data. Transient sources, such as gamma-ray bursts, supernovae and solar flares, are crucial phenomena to understand the high-energy Universe. However, the detection of such phenomena is challenging due to their ephemeral nature and the large amount of data produced by gamma-ray experiments. The approach proposed in this project aims to use Deep Learning algorithms to process and analyze spatial and temporal data from telescopes and satellites. In particular, complex Deep Learning architectures, such as Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for image analysis and Recurrent Neural Networks (RNNs), including LSTMs, and Attention-based models such as Transformers, will be employed to handle photon emission time series and GNNs to analyze and model spatial relationships between various astronomical objects/events or recognize and classify complex patterns in the data that are not immediately evident through more traditional approaches.

HEALTHIER AND EARLIER THROUGH DIGITAL TECHNOLOGY: TOWARDS A TRANSDIAGNOSTIC STAGING MODEL OF EATING AND SLEEP DISORDERS IN ADOLESCENCE
- Period: 2024 - 2025
- Programme: PRIN - Research Projects of National Relevance – Call for proposal 2022
- Budget: Euro € 260.486,00
This project focus on sleep and eating disorders, which are highly prevalent among adolescents, often co-occur, and are associated with many significant comorbidities and functional impairment. Sleep and eating disorders share common maintaining factors, including negative affect, functional impairment and increased reactivity to disease-related stimuli. The project will use a transdiagnostic staging model to produce new knowledge about the mechanisms underlying the transition from prodromal symptoms to full-blown syndromes in adolescence. A longitudinal and multimodal approach to data collection will be used to examine the predictive risk of psychological factors implicated in the onset and maintenance of eating and/or sleep disorders.
Individuals at high-risk for, or with clinical symptoms of eating and/or sleep disorders will be identified through agile online surveys and will be referred early to online resources for self-care. A putative and promising transdiagnostic mechanism for the development of eating and/or sleep disorders, i.e., increased reactivity to disease-related stimuli, will be tested using virtual reality, an inclusive, affordable and engaging technology. A pilot study will be embedded in this project to test the acceptability, feasibility and preliminary efficacy of a virtual reality self-guided intervention to improve emotion regulation towards disease-related stimuli and remediate eating and/or sleep problems in adolescence. The feasibility of the project is demonstrated by its deep rooting in studies
previously conducted by the research team, by their documented and integrated expertise in the fields of eating disorders, sleep disorders, experimental research, and analysis of big data, and by their national and international network of collaborations, which will inform the refinement of the project’s goals and methods throughout, and which will ensure that findings are disseminated widely to the relevant stakeholders.
MOTHERS
POOR SLEEP DURING PREGNANCY AS RISK FACTOR FOR POST-PARTUM STRESS AND MENTAL HEALTH: A TRANSLATIONAL, LONGITUDINAL AND CLINICAL STUDY. MATERNAL OUTCOME AFTER THERAPY FOR SLEEP
- Period: 2023 - 2025
- Programme: PRIN - Research Projects of National Relevance – Call for proposal 2022
- Budget: Euro € 194.330,00
The project addresses psychobiological mechanisms leading to peripartum mental disorders. It focuses on one key risk factor for psychopathology, which is poor sleep continuity. The project adopts a multidisciplinary synergistic approach combining a clinical team and a preclinical team in the attempt to: describe the link between maternal poor sleep quality and the cascade of events which may enhance vulnerability to stress and risk for mental disorders; unravel molecular mechanisms underlying this relationship and their inter-generational persistence; evaluate the efficacy in preventing these negative outcomes of specific psychological prenatal interventions. From basic-research perspective, long-term consequences of poor maternal sleep on adult sleep phenotypes will be described exploring epigenetic mechanisms at the base of this relationship and validating peripheral biomarkers for early-life stress exposure. From clinical-research perspective, longitudinal psychobiological associations between sleep and mental health related variables will be evaluated from early pregnancy to 6-months post-partum in women with insomnia symptoms compared to good sleepers. A target preventive intervention directed to improve sleep and prevent peripartum psychopathology will be tested in a randomized controlled trial in women with insomnia symptoms without psychiatric comorbidity. Genetic, biological, physiological and psychological psychotherapy-related outcomes will be evaluated. Attention to dynamic influences between family members will be dedicated. The project has several potential applications, including: development of a translational model describing how sleep during pregnancy affects stress adaptation and depression during post-partum in women and female mice; demonstration of long-term negative impact of antenatal stress conditions in maternal health care; establishment of new ecological assessments of sleep problems in real life for both research and clinical purposes; promotion of innovative preventing interventions targeting sleep quality for depression and anxiety outcome in pregnant women complaining insomnia; identification and validation of new and easily applicable biomarkers of maternal poor sleep quality.
THE LEXICALIZATION OF THE ADJECTIVE CLASS IN INDO-EUROPEAN AND SEMITIC
- Period: 2023 - 2025
- Programme: PRIN - Research Projects of National Relevance – Call for proposal 2022
- Budget: Euro € 204.980,00
The project bridges together historical and typological linguistics. Its main results concern parts of speech (PoS) typology, Indo-European (IE) and Semitic studies, as well as linguistic terminology, theoretical morphology and the history of language science. It is well-know that a cross-linguistically agreed and consistent theory of PoS classification has never been proposed so far. Moreover, quite a few scholars think that such theory is not only lacking at present; rather it is impossible in principle. The project will counter such view bringing in two results. It will: i) propose a new and consistent theory of PoS classification across languages, testing such theory against a balanced variety sample of 60 languages; ii) use such theory to describe two enormous and previously neglected or understudied typological changes at the level of the PoS which occurred in two of the most ancient language families of the world, namely Indo-European and Semitic.
These families were chosen for their long and continuous tradition, which helps identify long-term typological changes. They also exhibit a novel type of change not previously discussed: lexicalization. This term, akin to grammaticalization, describes the emergence of a class of primary adjectival morphemes in a language's lexicon. Specifically, it refers to the shift of a major part of speech, such as adjectives, from the realm of grammar and word formation to that of the lexicon. This lexicalization process is observed in the adjective class within both families being studied. I dentifying changes in linguistic typology will enhance our understanding of general-typological linguistics and enable us to propose a new, cross-linguistically valid definition of the root, a key unit in historical linguistics. Traditionally, the root has been seen as either a diachronic concept, a formal consonantal template, or simply a verb stem with historical roots in Indian or Arabic grammars. This project aims to challenge these views by demonstrating that the Sanskrit and Arabic root is not merely a formal unit but a lexical morpheme in languages that primarily feature verbal roots and nouns. In these languages, what is typically called an "adjective" is actually a derived stem, a nominalization built from a verb meaning a quality, akin to a verb-like adjective as described by Dixon.
REGULATING TECHNOLOGICAL DRIVEN FINANCE: ACTIVITIES, SUBJECTS AND SUPERVISION IN THE DIGITAL ERA.
- Period: 2022 - 2025
- Programme: PRIN - Research Projects of National Relevance – Call for proposal 2020
- Budget: Euro € 225.776,00
The project aims at investigating the financial innovation in the EU internal market due to the free movement of capitals and the new operational solutions introduced by the latest technologies, in order to provide an effective contribution for the benefit of the global networks (i.e. FSB, IMF), the regional regulatory authorities (i.e. EU bodies) and domestic institutions in their effort to set the laws and regulations in this field (with respect to the proposal of a ‘national plan for the recovery and resilience’ made by the Italian Government of 15 January 2021). Hence, the research will verify the thesis that the digitalization reduces the power of the State to regulating technological driven finance and an increasing number of operators may access the market for capital and financial services without being subject to the proper supervision. The Research Group aims at going further in a path started by the investigators and published in several journals and books that analysed the nexus between innovation, technology, economic fundamental rights, customers’ protection and State regulation (on ‘electronic money institutions’ (2000), ‘remote marketing of insurance services’ (2012), ‘shadow banking system’ (2016), ‘financial markets’ (2019), ‘big data’ (2019), ‘financial data aggregators’ (2019) and ‘fintech regulation’ (2020)).
This analysis will deliver a specific outcome to satisfy the general interest for this topic resulting from the economical relevance of innovative and technological driven forms of banking and finance: a quantitative analysis of the financial innovation will testify how the new techniques influence the economy of G20 Countries.
Then, the results would improve the public awareness in the scientific field of the multifaceted ways of digitalization in the market for capital and financial services, of the diverging approach towards such innovations by incumbent and new operators, of the relevant risks and opportunities and the subsequent need for public intervention to protect individual rights and financial stability. These results will also contribute to the search for an innovation-friendly environment that does not hinder capitals flows in the EU internal market while at the same time supports the real economy.
GIANO
GEO-RISKS ASSESSMENT AND MITIGATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
- Period: 2022 - 2025
- Programme: PRIN - Research Projects of National Relevance – Call for proposal 2020
- Budget: Euro € 661.353,00
The GIANO project goals are: 1) to define a robust protocol for the quantitative assessment of the risk deriving from the geo-hazards afflicting the Italian cultural heritage; 2) most important, to identify the least invasive and best suited geotechnical mitigation techniques to tackle these geo-hazards, for various typologies of monumental constructions. Owing to the multi-disciplinary nature of the subject, a holistic approach will be adopted, appointing an advisory committee (End Users Group, EUG) made of experts of complementary, relevant skills. Frequently, damages in heritage assets have a geotechnical origin. The Leaning Tower of Pisa is perhaps the best, paradigmatic example in this regard, since it is founded on a highly compressible and spatially heterogeneous soil deposit responsible of an uneven distribution of ground settlements. Other relevant geohazards affecting Italian cultural heritage are: slope instability, expanding soils, subsidence, piping, leaching, sinkholes, ground vibrations, and of course earthquakes.
The GIANO project will be carried out in 3 subsequent Actions. In Action 1, for some archetypes of historical constructions selected in advance as representative of the variety of Italian cultural heritage, an in-depth geo-risk assessment will be carried out using the specific know-how of the involved RUs. This will allow to build up a virtual laboratory for the simulation of typical failure mechanisms, out of which fragility models will be defined, using convenient calculation tools like the macro-elements. In Action 2, the best suited mitigation technologies will be studied, quantifying their effect on geo-risks mitigation. For two specific combinations of historical construction and geo-hazard of the list analysed in Action 1, an in-depth pilot study will be carried out, performing non-invasive geotechnical investigations and centrifuge tests on reduced-scale models with and without mitigation actions. Advanced numerical analyses of the Ground-Monument System (GMS) will be carried out to investigate numerically the most suitable, non-invasive hazard mitigation technology.
Action 3 is a major pillar of the project as it aims to turn the project outcomes into a set of technical recommendations and guidelines that will to be used by public authorities, decision makers and conservation specialists to identify and effectively mitigate the geo-hazards afflicting many heritage assets.

AIRE
ADVANCED INTEGRATION FOR RENEWABLE ENERGIES
- Period: 2021 - 2024
- Programme: Industrial research and experimental development projects in the 12 areas of specialization identified in PNR (National Research Program) 2015-2020
- Budget: Euro € 3.838.891,17
Reducing CO2 emissions and imports of primary energy sources are among the objectives of the European Union. One option is to gasify local residual biomass and convert it into high-value gaseous fuels. The production of gaseous fuels from domestic biomass will reduce the dependence of the transport and electricity sectors on oil and natural gas imports. Furthermore, the use of biological residues avoids conflicts with food production and other land uses, reducing CO2 emissions. In this context, AIRE wants to develop an integrated and flexible system to generate electricity and store the surplus in two different ways, both aimed at producing Bio-SNG from the gasification of biomass and electricity by ICE in a distributed network. The first consists in the production of Bio-SNG from residual biomass with an innovative gasification technology (100 kWth double fluidized bed gasifier) and integrated gas conditioning with an advanced methanation reactor (methane yield of 2-5 Nm3/ h): the final objective is to test an integrated pilot plant to obtain synthetic natural gas.

ProCyD
A MODULAR HIGHER EDUCATION SYSTEM IN DATA PROTECTION AND CYBERSECURITY FOR SUPPORTING THE DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION IN MOZAMBIQUE AND SOUTH AFRICA
- Period: 2024 - 2026
- Programme: Erasmus + KA2 - Capacity Building in Higher Education, Strand 2
- Budget: Euro € 799.971,00
The envisioned goal of the project is the introduction or strengthening of data protection and cybersecurity into higher education to support the digital transformation in Mozambique and South Africa. Digital transformation is a challenge that all countries around the world must face. Developing countries such as Mozambique as well as emerging countries such as South Africa can particularly benefit from the upcoming changes: digitalisation can be a successful accelerator to escape the poverty trap and reduce the gap between rich and poor. But it can also have the opposite effect and increase poverty and inequality. Above all, however, the handling of data protection and data security issues is not clarified here in many places. Digitalisation needs IT security and people who, based on knowledge in both data security and data protection, can realistically assess the benefits and risks that accompany this transformation.
ProCyD project aims to support the people, the economy, civil society, academia, and political decision-makers of our partner countries in taking advantage of the opportunities of digital transformation and mastering competent risks. With a modular system of courses for students and lecturers of the partner HEIs, the project wants to make a significant contribution here.
The plan is to design and implement a course for general basic qualification as well as new study programmes at the bachelor’s and the master’s level. The development of an online masters’ programme at the South African HEIs that will be made available to the partner HEIs and beyond will increase the impact of the project. To address the challenge that the partner HEIs lack qualified teaching staff in the targeted subject areas, we plan a pilot master’s programme with semesters abroad within the project runtime. This will create an initial pool of specialists as well as lecturers, which will ensure the sustainability of the project results.

SO-FREE has been conceived to realize a truly flexible SOFC platform, addressing the 5 kWe power class, that allows to integrate multiple SOFC stack technologies within any CHP system, fed with any fuel mixture ranging from natural gas to biogas to pure hydrogen. Two stack technologies are considered in order to cover the full spectrum ranging from the lowest-temperature anode-supported stacks operating at 650°C to electrolyte-supported stacks running at 850°C. The ambition of SO-FREE is to achieve full interchangeability of stacks in different systems, in pursuit of a barrier-free market for SOFC stack and system manufacturers alike, by standardising the stack module-system interface. Main BoP development aspects will focus on the anode gas recirculation and thermal management for the wide operating range, developing necessary controls to achieve fully autonomous regulation of the system as a function of the fuel composition fed.
Finally, the two systems running on flexible fuel compositions will be demonstrated, each for at least 9 months and clocking 6000 hours stack running time. One system will be operated in pre-certification mode addressing all applicable requirements for the prototype in order to formulate a pathway for successive CE conformity and certification. The other system will be operated in end-use application (selected by PGE), in order to identify real-world response and measure ultimate performance, both in terms of stack degradation and end user satisfaction.
The main project activities/results are:
a) System-ready stacks: bridging the proprietary stack technology of two stack designs to a standardized integration into different systems, regarding hardware as well as operation windows, with respect to thermal, mechanical and electrical integration, assembly, service and maintenance.
b) Stack-ready systems: two ~ 5 kW SOFC systems will be developed and functionally tested via the standardized stack-system module interface both systems will be capable of using both stack module designs.
c) Pre-certification, Demonstration, Economic Assessment: including system pre-certification, demonstration and economic assessment.
d) Dissemination, communication, standardisation and exploitation
