OVERVIEW

Counseling Psychology is a branch of psychology that focuses on enhancing the mental health, personal development, and well-being of individuals. In contrast to clinical psychology, which emphasizes serious psychopathologies, counseling psychology is primarily concerned with everyday life difficulties, transitions, and adjustment issues.

It is an applied branch of psychology that focuses on facilitating the individual’s personal and interpersonal functioning, lifelong development, and the promotion of mental well-being.

More specifically, Counseling Psychology helps promote mental well-being and the functioning of the individual’s life at every age and stage of development. The field focuses on improving the individual’s ability to cope with everyday challenges, to function better in relationships, at work, and in social life.

Additionally, Counseling Psychology helps in the management of emotional and social difficulties, since it focuses on issues such as anxiety, stress, relationship problems, life crises, adaptation to changes, and more general difficulties in behavioral patterns.

It emphasizes development and prevention, since it does not primarily aim at diagnosing severe mental disorders (as is often the case in clinical psychology), but rather at preventing, progressing and empowering individuals to manage problems before they develop into more serious ones.

Therefore, Counseling is a process that functions as a supportive interaction, where its basic function is a collaborative support relationship between the mental health counselor and the individual (or group), where communication and psychoeducational techniques are used.

In conclusion, Counseling Psychology is a dynamic and human-centered discipline that aims to empower the individual and improve their quality of life, through scientifically documented interventions.
